OCEANIC MANTA PROJECT
This little ink sketch of an Oceanic Manta was the starting point for a much bigger project, made possible by the generous support of everyone who responded to my crowd-funding campaign. If that’s you - thank you so much! I hope you’ve enjoyed seeing this ceramic mural come to life.
Please take a look at the finished artwork below, and use the illustrated guide to help find your tile amongst the Manta!
Made entirely by hand from small porcelain tiles, the manta artwork has a wingspan of almost 2 metres. Over a period of several months, each and every tile was carefully cut, decorated, glazed and kiln fired. 225 individually made pieces complete the finished artwork!
I’m currently looking for a permanent home for this work. Please get in touch if you have any thoughts or suggestions, I’d love to hear from you. Inspired by this incredible ocean giant, I hope to find a location where this mural can capture the imagination of those that see it, promoting both the beauty and vulnerability of manta rays. Also available for installation is a tile mural of a humpback whale calf, created using the same intricate process.
Special thanks to marine biologist, wildlife filmmaker and ocean conservationist Inka Cresswell, whose stunning photography inspired this work.
